AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE FORCE IN SOUTH VIETNAM: AUSTRALIAN ARMY TRAINING TEAM VIETNAM (AATTV) PERIOD: airmail covers to Australia posted through the South Vietnamese civilian mail system with 1962 (Nov.28) Saigon to Brisbane franked 15 SVN piastres for foreign airmail rate tied by Saigon machine cancel and 1963 (Aug.20) Ninh Hoa to Brisbane franked 15p with transit backstamps for Nha Trang and Saigon. The AATTV was established in South Vietnam in August 1962 and it was not until mid 1965 that Australian Forces were able to establish their own postal services. Mail from this period is scarce especially sent through the South Vietnam civilian mail system. Other options included through the Australian Embassy, carried privately by returning servicemen or the US Forces Postal Service. Good condition.   (2)

(spelling as "FORCE") usages endorsed "Free", 1965-67 covers to Australia franked 6d Thornbill & with "DEFENCE FORCES POSTAGE CONCESSION 17" in violet and black & 5c frankings with "DEFENCE FORCES POSTAGE CONCESSION 26", strong group of registered mail with 1967 provisional registration label on envelope franked 25c (5c concessional postage and 20c registration), 1970 cover with registration h/stamp franked 25c (free postage and 25c registration fee) and some registered parcel pieces with various frankings. An excellent group thoroughly researched with many scarce items.
AFPO1 was established primarily to service the 1st Battalion The Royal Australian Regiment Battle Group at Bien Hoa. It eventually serviced Headquarters of the Australian Force Vietnam (AFV), AATTV, most RAN mails and the Australian Civilian Medical Team. It opened on 1st August 1965 and closed on 13th December 1971.   (22)

AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE FORCE IN SOUTH VIETNAM: AUSTRALIAN FORCE POST OFFICE 3: 1966-72 extensive study on exhibition pages of the postal services at AFPO3; includes wide range of usages of "AUST F.P.O. 3" datestamp & machine cancels on ASCO envelopes (1st and 2nd printings) sent Free or franked with 5c QEII, 5c Thornbill, 1966 examples bearing straight line "FORCES CONCESSION RATE" & 5c concession rate covers with diamond "DEFENCE FORCES POSTAGE CONCESSION 16" in range of colours (also codes 20, 21, 23, 27, 28 & 30), registered mail with provisional labels & rubber registration h/stamp showing franking combinations of 5c concessional rate and 20c, 25c and 30c registration fees. An important and thoroughly researched group very difficult to assemble again and recording important postal history.
This office within the 1st Australian Logistic Support Group was sited on the south eastern side of the coastal city of Vung Tau (known to the Australian as "Back Beach" . Opened on 26th April 1966 it closed on 22nd February 1972 upon the withdrawal of Australian Forces from South Vietnam.   (40)

An extensive and well researched group difficult to assemble in such detail again.
This office was sited at the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) Base situated at Nui Dat and between 1968-69 was the busiest of all the AFPO's. It opened on 1st October 1966 and closed on 7th December 1971.   (49)

In all 119,000 booklets were despatched prior to introduction of the Free postage concession. A scarce assembly.   (10)

AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE FORCE IN SOUTH VIETNAM: AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE FORCES POSTAL STATIONERY: collection of stamped envelopes and air letters issued in 1967 for use by Australian Forces in South Vietnam with 5c envelope mint (2) and used and 5c air letter mint and used.
Only 44,000 envelopes and 48,000 air letters were printed and their unpopularity (because of the effects of the climate in South Vietnam) meant that most were destroyed. They had a short life as the Free concession was introduced September 1967 a few months after they were issued in May 1967.   (5)

AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE FORCE IN SOUTH VIETNAM: AUSTRALIAN FORCE POST OFFICE ANNEXES 1A & 1B: 1971-72 study on exhibition pages of mails processed through these transit centres with 1971(May 23) ASCO envelope cancelled with "AUST F.P.O. 1A" datestamp, OHMS envelopes (2) and Air Mail Advice form with simlar strikes, Registered mail advices (2) and OHMS envelope bearing "AUST F.P.O. 1B" datestamps. As no personal mail services were provided by these offices, markings are very scarce.
The role of the sections/annexes was to act as transit centres and prepare mail for despatch to Australia. Whilst they were provided with steel datestamps no personal mail services were provided to individuals. The formation of the Sections/Annexes was a result of the pending closure of AFPO5 and relocation of the AATTV to Phuoc Tuy Province.   (7)
