The Burt Hartshorn Collection of Tin Toys, Model Aircraft and related items

Burt’s childhood in the Melbourne suburb of Essendon during the early thirties, probably set the scene for a lifetime spent making model aircraft, collecting tin toys, Meccano sets, Hornby trains and associated items. He often talked about the happy hours he and his brother Joe spent looking through the fence at the arrival and departure of the aircraft which were then opening up Australia’s skies.

He became an engineer and his early working life commenced at Essendon aerodrome (with the fledgling Ansett Airlines), thus kindling his love of aviation. He had an enormous library covering all aspects of aviation and developed many friendships in the field. While his model aircraft display great attention to detail, and are constructed in the traditional way, making use of balsa wood, tissue, wire and hand formed plastic, they are all intended to fly.

The diversity of the aircraft he selected to model, reflect the wide ranging talents of the man himself. An accomplished professional engineer, painter of merit, racing motorcyclist and musician, he has assembled, with passion, a unique collection. Burt passed away earlier this year and we are proud to offer this catalogue in his memory.
