The typed message reads: "I certify that these two American Gold Coins.....were two of the last gold coins that we possessed in America; that they were carried by us in the "Southern Cross" across the Pacific on the first Trans-Pacific Flight....and that they were given by me and my parents as a thanks offering without any conditions as to their use to the Parish Church of St.Aidan, Longueville, on our return to Sydney after having been lost at "Coffee Royal" in Western Australia for eleven days." The "Coffee Royal" incident [See AAMC.131] transfixed the nation, while Kingsford Smith and his crew were lost, and while the tragic loss of two of their attempted rescuers - Keith Anderson and Robert Hitchcock - was the subject of daily newspaper and radio coverage.
