A UNIQUE MEMENTO OF THE 1928 FIRST FLIGHT ACROSS THE PACIFIC by KINGSFORD SMITH, ULM, LYON & WARNER
Two U.S. Gold coins ($2˝ Indian Head 1927 & $5 Indian Head 1909) affixed to a document signed by Charles Kingsford Smith and his parents, William and Catherine Mary Kingsford Smith. The typed message reads: "I certify that these two American Gold Coins.....were two of the last gold coins that we possessed in America; thatb they were carried by us in the "Southern Cross" across the Pacific on the first Trans-Pacific Flight in 1929 (sic), and that they were given by me and my parents as a thanks offering without any conditions as to their use to the Parish Church of St.Aidan, Longueville, on our return to Sydney after having been lost at "Coffee Royal" in Western Australia for eleven days."
The "Coffee Royal" incident [See AAMC.131] transfixed the nation, while Kingsford Smith and his crew were lost, and while the tragic loss of two of their attempted rescuers - Keith Anderson and Robert Hitchcock - was the subject of daily newspaper and radio coverage.

Liam "Bill" Beausang, who had worked as an engineer for Kingsford Smith in the late 1920s went on to work for the ABC for more than 30 years.

THE 1d, 3d & 6d KINGSFORD SMITH COMMEMORATIVE STAMPS OF MARCH 1931
The unique presentation set of three stamps as issued, in sunken card overmounted with cream card, with the ornately hand-lettered dedication:
"Kingsford Smith's World Flights.
Stamp Issue, 1931.
Postmaster General's Department,
Commonwealth of Australia."
This important piece is unlisted in The Australian Commonwealth Specialist's Catalogue [2007 edition] and has never been on the market. It was presented to Charles Kingsford Smith by the Postmaster General, Albert Green, a Labor Minister in the Scullin Government who had campaigned for a strong Australian air force. Despite the onset of the Great Depression, he had implemented a training scheme for Australian pilots and purchased several aircraft, so he and Kingsford Smith would undoubtedly have agreed on the importance of aviation in Australia's future.
PROVENANCE: The presentation set passed to Kingsford Smith's widow, Mary, following his death in October 1935, and, by descent, following her death, to their only son, Charles Kingsford Smith, Jr. who has signed the accompanying certificate of authenticity.

Virgil Gavan Reilly [1892-1974] also known as "Virgil", active during the 1920s-40s, designed the A.I.F. stamps issued in 1940 and won the inaugural Walkley Award for illustration in 1958. Frank Dunne [c1897-1937] was very active as a magazine and newspaper illustrator. His oil painting of Kingsford Smith is in the National Library of Australia collection.
