THE 1d, 3d & 6d KINGSFORD SMITH COMMEMORATIVE STAMPS OF MARCH 1931 The unique presentation set of three stamps as issued, in sunken card overmounted with cream card, with the ornately hand-lettered dedication: "Kingsford Smith's World Flights. Stamp Issue, 1931. Postmaster General's Department, Commonwealth of Australia." This important piece is unlisted in The Australian Commonwealth Specialist's Catalogue [2007 edition] and has never been on the market. It was presented to Charles Kingsford Smith by the Postmaster General, Albert Green, a Labor Minister in the Scullin Government who had campaigned for a strong Australian air force. Despite the onset of the Great Depression, he had implemented a training scheme for Australian pilots and purchased several aircraft, so he and Kingsford Smith would undoubtedly have agreed on the importance of aviation in Australia's future. PROVENANCE: The presentation set passed to Kingsford Smith's widow, Mary, following his death in October 1935, and, by descent, following her death, to their only son, Charles Kingsford Smith, Jr. who has signed the accompanying certificate of authenticity.
